Boards & Commissions
The City of Cleveland Heights currently has thirteen Boards and Commissions that advise and assist the City Council in setting City policy:

Boards and Commissions Application

Architectural Board of Review
ABR protects properties on which buildings or structures are constructed or altered, maintains the high character of community development, and protects real estate from impairment or destruction of value. They accomplish this by regulating according to proper architectural principles the design, use of materials, finished grade lines and orientation of the reviewed projects.

Arts Commission
The purpose of the Cleveland Heights Arts Commission is to act in an advisory capacity to the Council and the Mayor related to arts policies, programs, and projects in order to help facilitate improved funding, creation, and enjoyment of the arts in the City.

Board of Control
The Board of Control administers the zoning ordinance regulations in the S-1 Mixed Use District and compliance with the amended Preliminary Land Use Plan for the Severance Town Center District.

Board of Zoning Appeals
This board hears citizen requests for zoning variances from regulations pertaining to signs, yard regulations, lot width requirements, off-street parking requirements, fences, etc. The board hears appeals concerning Housing, Zoning and Business Maintenance Codes.

Charter Review Commission
The charge of the Commission is to review the City’s Charter and to develop recommendations for such amendments to the Charter, if any, as the Commission shall find to be in the best interests of the City.

Citizens Advisory Committee
The committee provides a means for the community to obtain information on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, assists in the evaluation and preparation of the CDBG yearly application, participates in monitoring the implementation of the CDBG program, and reviews the City’s annual CDBG budget.

Civil Service Commission
The commission prepares and administers tests for hiring and promoting civil service employees in the police and fire divisions.

Climate and Environmental Sustainability Committee
Increases the awareness of issues of environmental sustainability with the residents and businesses located in the City. Encourages increased environmentally conscious activities by the residents and businesses located in the City. Serves as an advocate for environmental justice. Promotes through education and outreach best use practices for sustainable living, business, and economic development.

Commission on Aging
To serve in an advisory capacity to Council on concerns of the aging and to recommend programs for the aging and means of implementing such programs.

Fair Practices Board
The board investigates and reviews discrimination complaints concerning unlawful housing practices, and recommends, when necessary, educational and other programs designed to promote fair housing practices.

Landmark Commission
The Landmark Commission designates landmarks in the city in order to preserve, protect and perpetuate places, buildings, structures, works of art, etc., having a special historical, community or aesthetic interest or value.

Lead-Safe Advisory Board
The responsibilities of the Lead-Safe Advisory Board shall be to provide recommendations for improvements to the City's lead-safe policies and procedures, to report, on a quarterly basis, progress and status of the City's Lead-Safe Certification requirement and other lead poisoning prevention related efforts to the Council.

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
This board acts in an advisory and consultative capacity to Council in the area of parks and recreation.

Parks and Recreation Youth Advisory Board
The Board will make recommendations to Council on parks and recreation matters, including the development of recreational programs, parks maintenance, and the creation and use of recreational spaces. The Board will promote positive community relations and engagement among youth of all ages by organizing events, workshops, and initiatives and engaging with the Commission on Aging to help encourage activity between youth and seniors.

Planning Commission
They make recommendations to Council and the Mayor on matters affecting the physical development of the City.

Racial Justice Task Force
To analyze racial justice and equity within the City of Cleveland Heights as a community and as a municipal organization, and to recommend processes, policies and action steps to create an inclusive community where the likelihood of success is not based on race or ethnicity, where law enforcement and the justice system operate free from bias, and where diversity is recognized as a hallmark of a strong, resourceful and resilient community.

Transportation and Mobility Committee
The purpose of this Committee shall be to make recommendations on transportation plans for the City, particularly plans that affect and improve transportation by modes which are alternatives to private automobiles; recommendations to assist in implementing the City’s Complete and Green Streets and Vision Zero policies; recommendations for ADA compliance and accessibility for persons with disabilities; and, providing a means for the community to learn about matters related to transportation within the City of Cleveland Heights and the City's connectivity to nearby regions.
