History & Designer Architects
The Inglewood Historic District is an early twentieth century architect-designed neighborhood envisioned and implemented by the Van Sweringen brothers, famed developers of much of Shaker Heights. The neighborhood was developed using the Garden City manner of curving streets and irregularly sized lots and included deed covenants to guarantee a high level of architectural design and to attract only the highest class residents. The single-family development includes houses designed by prominent architects including Howell and Thomas, Walker and Weeks, Charles Schneider and Bloodgood Tuttle, to name only a few.
Styles
High style homes were built in the styles of:
- Beaux Arts
- Colonial Revival
- French Eclectic
- Italian Renaissance
- Shingle
- Tudor Revival
The neighborhood appears much as it did in the 1910s and 1920s when most of these fine homes were constructed.
