Road worker walking along roadsideBronze Level Bicycle Friendly City Award & Edgehill Buffered Bike Lane

Road WorkerAlso in 2013, the City of Cleveland Heights was awarded a Bronze Level Designation by the League of American Bicyclists. In that same year, Cleveland Heights created the first buffered bike lane in the region on the uphill lane of Edgehill Road’s hill that connects to Little Italy and University Circle. Sharrows, a road marking that reminds motorists to share the road with bicyclists, were painted on the downhill lane which was widened rather than establishing a bike lane because in Cleveland, parallel parking was needed. In addition, bicyclists’ speed downhill is not much slower than motorists’. In 2013, 134 bicyclists used Edgehill at Overlook from 5-7 p.m. That was the highest count that year by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, our five-county metropolitan planning agency. Awarded a “Best Bike Lane Project” at the 2014 Greater Cleveland Trails and Greenways Conference, Edgehill had 159 bicyclists counted from 5-7 p.m. in 2014, supporting its recognition as an attractive bike facility.

Other Past Projects

Cleveland Heights’ zoning regulations were updated in 2012 to require short-and long-term (weather-protected) bicycle parking and bike shower facilities where appropriate. Also in 2012, the City added 39 bike parking rings on parking meter posts and had Metro Metal Works install eight U-shaped racks.

In 2011, North Park Boulevard from Lee to Harcourt received bike lanes which reduced the lane width and cut down on motorists’ passing and speeding. Federal studies have found that this sort of traffic calming reduces motorists’ crashes, too. Bike lanes add much more comfort for bicyclists of average skills, so the City seeks such opportunities during repaving projects especially on busy streets where sufficient curb-to-curb width exists.
